During Vitafoods 2016, Ingredia showcased their new lactoferrin protein. FoodBev Media's Darren Wood caught up with Fatiha Hani and Jessica Schwarz to talk about Lactoferrin.

They explained that is Lactoferrin is a protein occurring naturally in milk and human secretions. This glycoprotein has a high iron binding capacity which provides antimicrobial activity.

Ensuring the freshness of produce is a constant concern for producers, retailers and brands. Fresh Produce is a $600 billion worldwide business that loses 30% of its product from farm to table. Current practises often involve visible inspection, which is inaccurate and inefficient.

A US based start-up called FreshSurety has developed a system that is able to accurately measure the freshness of produce and provide up to the minute carton-level quality and value information.

Founded in 2012, Natural Machines is a company leading the 3D printing revolution in food. They’ve recently launched Foodini, a 3D food printer that looks to change our vision of home cooking. Claiming to be “the first 3D food printer kitchen appliance to contribute to a healthy eating lifestyle.”

Foodini is an Internet of Things kitchen appliance that uses fresh ingredients, which the user prepares at home, to create meals and elaborate edible creations.

In the UK budget on 16 March Chancellor George Osborne announced a new £520million levy on sugary drinks.

Just nine months after launch and after an investment of well over $1 billion, US-based coffee pod machine maker Keurig Green Mountain has pulled the plug on Keurig Kold – its mix-your-own carbonated soft drinks maker.

FoodBev Media's Bill Bruce takes a look at reasons for it's failure explaining while consumers seemed to embrace the concept of mixing their favourite drinks at home, they didn’t like the $370 price tag, the size of the machine and how long it took to noisily make each drink.

Nelly Baron Communications for SIAL network talked to Claire Phoenix about this year’s SIAL 2016 – the largest food and beverage show in the world.

The SIAL global event company has seen growth in Canada (Montreal), China and the Middle East and is always looking for more sites but only where food distribution is growing i.e a middle class population with spending power and a desire for diverse food.

Indonesia is looking likely as the next SIAL event but not the Philippines. Singapore is already the main food supplier hub and has the biggest shows in the world.

In all, 160,000 visitors are expected to view the over 7000 exhibitors (including a food processing machinery section) plus 120 delegate food ministers from around the world.

Bill Bruce spoke with Craig Burns of Muddle Me and Pascal Blum of Pacojet about the two companies award wins in the Gulfood awards 2016.

Muddle Me won the Best Coffee Innovation award for their Slayer Espresso Single Group while Pacojet claimed the Best Light Equipment Innovation award for the Pacojet 2.

Protein powder is a $10 Billion market in the United States, with thousands of companies joining the sector to make the most of this growing trend.

However, start-up Plasma Nutrition has just developed a patented technology that could dramatically change the market. It’s technology improves the performance of protein, increasing its solubility and amount that can be absorbed by the consumer. This has major consequences for brands, allowing them to put more protein in their products, lessen packaging and improve taste profiles!
